One night in the early 2000s, Grace witnessed an “exorcism” at a weekend lock-in at Camas Meadows Bible Camp near Cashmere, Washington. She said the ritual was performed by Kent McMullen and Greg McPherson, both current Grace City Church leaders then employed by the Wenatchee Free Methodist Church, which is now known as Sage Hills Church.
“I witnessed an exorcism at an event I’m positive was led by a Wenatchee Free Methodist pastor, I can’t tell you for sure whether it was Kent (McMullen) or whether it was Josh’s dad (Greg McPherson), but it was literally because somebody had been at the campfire while we were praying (and) was speaking in tongues,” Grace said. “And that kid who did that had come from a tradition in which speaking in tongues was very natural, but in our theological tradition, if you don’t have an interpreter when you speak in tongues, you are therefore filled with demons – not filled by the holy spirit. So basically, that kid got hustled away and then got exorcized.”
Grace said it was a winter lock-in, an overnight event at the remote bible camp, billed as a weekend away for teens.
“They pulled him aside, and they asked him to lay down, I think they got him like a pillow or something for his head,” she said. “And they were saying, ‘We think that there’s a demon in you, we’re going to pray over you.’”
