Although a Confluence Health spokesperson refused to answer questions about the existence of black mold at Central Washington Hospital this week, leaked emails reveal there’s black mold in at least the Emergency Department.
The emails also reveal a sense of mistrust among staff about how the situation is being handled by the administration.
Black mold, or Stachybotrys chartarum, is dangerous because its spores can cause a variety of health problems. It can cause respiratory issues, allergic reactions, skin irritation, eye irritation, sinus infections, and some studies suggest that prolonged exposure to it can lead to neurological effects.
After being asked “Is there black mold at Central Washington Hospital?,” Adam MacDonald, Confluence’s corporate communications program manager, wrote in an email that they couldn’t answer “open-ended questions out of context.”
