Man To Embark On 'Narrow Way Around' Honoring Late Father, Benefitting the YMCA
On July 6, Dave McCarter will embark on a 6,000-mile motorcycle trip, filming for a documentary series and encouraging folks to support a new Y facility
Motorcycle enthusiast David McCarter will embark on a long-distance motorcycle ride called “The Narrow Way Around” from the parking lot of the Wenatchee YMCA on July 6, and the community is invited to gather and help see him off shortly after 9 am.
McCarter is riding to honor his late father, Dave Sr., and to support one of their favorite organizations, the YMCA. I met up with him in the parking lot of the Y recently and asked him about what inspired him, and why he chose to raise awareness and funds for the Y.
“As a fourth grader I was here a lot at the after-school programs,” McCarter said. “I came from a single-parent family. Dad was working all the time and this was my home after school until he came and picked me up after work.”
To help support the campaign for a new building, he’s inviting folks to pledge their donations per mile by texting PLEDGE to (509) 790-4370 or by making a one-time donation online here.
You can follow McCarter’s journey as he rides on a special map at the Wenatchee YMCA, or on social media here.

The plan is to ride solo to the Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in time for the Harley Davidson 120th anniversary homecoming.
“My mission is to go see the Harley museum. That was my dad’s dying wish,” he said.
McCarter’s route will take him past Mount Rushmore, across Glacier National Park, to the motorcycle Mecca of Sturgis, South Dakota, and into parts of Canada on a trip he and his father always wanted to take together.
The two were inspired by the 2004 adventure series called the “Long Way Round” featuring Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman in which the pair rides around the world and documents their experiences. Like Boorman and McGregor, McCarter plans to film his trip and make a documentary series about his experiences on the road.
The YMCA is inviting the community is invited to gather for a send-off party in the parking lot in front of the Better Together mural on July 6 at 9 am. For more information contact Dorry Foster, executive director of the Wenatchee Valley YMCA, at dorry@wenymca.org.
