Public Teacher, Grace City Church Member Forbids Student From Writing Report on Harvey Milk, Parents Say
And it's not the first time parents have complained about Kathleen Milanuk bringing her religious beliefs, biases into the classroom
Foothills Middle School Teacher Kathleen Milanuk has been vocal about her religious beliefs and the fact that she attends Grace City Church since the beginning of the year – but when she told Maggie Boles’ son he couldn’t write a report about Harvey Milk because he was a homosexual it was a bridge too far.
Milanuk teaches a 6th grade leadership course. In October she told her class to research a leader, write a report and prepare a presentation about that person.
Her son chose Harvey Milk, a human rights activist and the first openly gay man elected to public office in California state history. Milk was assassinated by a rightwing extremist because of his sexuality on Nov. 27, 1978.
“When he first chose him he didn’t even know he was gay. He just thought he was cool. He stood up for peoples’ rights,” Boles said.
