Yes, there was a diamond-importing pipeline from "The Holy Land," aka Israel. The Sheriff at the time was involved according to the newspaper clippings I have. As far as how one becomes involved in capers like that, I think each person is unique. It's also a gradual process for most folks, in my experience. It's gradual until it's not, and there's no turning back.
