Fruit packing warehouses, retail businesses and public schools were all affected by folks participating in the national strike to protest Trump administration immigration policies
A reminder about Serbia and the overthrow of Slobadan Milošević. Just normal people saying "enough". Love that this happened so quickly and in Wenatchee!!!
Thank you for your coverage on this Dominick. I try to understand all sides to an issue. I've been researching and reading to educate myself on the current policies, terms used such as the different immigration statuses and various 3rd party analysis of the new policies. I'll readily admit, I am ignorant and confused.
Was the protesting targeted to specific items, and why? For instance, if you are here illegally, how or why should you expect to stay? I'm missing something for sure so I'll open myself up on this forum to be schooled (minus any hate I hope).
The protest was to highlight how important immigrants are to the everyday functioning of American life, and it's an annual event that was moved up by a couple of months specifically because of Trump's recent executive orders, specifically the one setting new parameters and quotas for ICE arrests and deportations. Another opposes the 14th Amendment in seeking to end birthright citizenship. In Trump's mind it's a way to combat "anchor babies" as he and others on the right call them. Critics say it's another step towards redefining Americans as specifically white descendants of European heritage. Trump also signed the Laken Riley Act in the first days of his second term, which means that an undocumented individual does not have to be convicted of a crime in court, only accused of one, to be detained and deported. Prior to this ICE was focused on convicted criminals who were in the US illegally.
Thanks for being so vulnerable and open to discussion! True debating, without harmful words or actions, is a lost art.
A lot of immigrants who are here “illegally” were fleeing something terrible, like violence or poverty. Maybe their parents had already crossed the border. Maybe they were just seeking a better life. Shouldn’t we strive to give those people a better life?
And if they’re contributing by paying taxes, running businesses, just living their lives, how is that harming America?
It would be a much better policy to give them the tools to become citizens. These people love America so much that risked their lives and likely gave their very last penny to come here. No one who loves our country that much should be pushed out.
And what if you were a kid when you came here? You’ll have no ties in whatever country you came from and maybe you don’t even speak the language. How will you survive?
The other problem is the racial issues. You don’t see illegal immigrants from Anglo or “white” countries being rounded up. Those people exist and yet, it’s only brown and black folks being shipped off. Called rapists and criminals. Accused of stealing jobs.
The policy is cruel and racist.
Feel free to push back on anything you think I have wrong. I’m open to notes 😊
Thank you Lindsey & Dominick. I agree with your points. I hope that deporting criminals is where it stops. I hope that we don't deport someone simply because they broke the law to get here either. Our country has done a terrible job of managing immigration - for years.
You bet. There's a lot of confusion and misinformation surrounding this issue and I think it's important to understand the facts as well as take into account how the shift in overall tone from the top has been. It's an intangible thing, but it certainly makes an impact on how people feel. I think we can see that evidenced by how folks are acting. Many immigrants feel threatened and it seems like many racists and other bad actors feel emboldened. So often it's not about what the president signs or doesn't sign, but the tone that he sets.
Thanks for this article. I shared it with my friend Garrett Bucks who posted this today:

It’s Diabolical to stand on stolen land and declare that immigrants of any kind have to leave.
